How to extract selected pages from a PDF
Choose individual PDF pages or ranges, place them in the required order and verify the new document before sharing it.
Choose extraction when you need part of a PDF
Page extraction creates a new PDF from specific pages in an existing document. It is useful when a ten-page file contains only three pages that a recipient needs, when an application requests particular evidence, or when a long report must be divided into a smaller reading pack. For example, entering 1, 4, 10 produces a new three-page PDF in that exact order.
Extraction differs from merging and organizing. A merger joins complete PDF files. An organizer changes the order, rotation or presence of pages across one document. An extractor starts with one PDF and copies only the page numbers you identify. Choose the tool that matches the job so you do not accidentally include private or irrelevant pages.
Enter pages and ranges clearly
Use commas or spaces to separate individual page numbers. A hyphen represents a continuous range, so 1-4 means pages 1, 2, 3 and 4. You can combine both forms: 1-4, 10 selects five pages. The SableApps preview also lets you select or remove a page by clicking its thumbnail, which is helpful when page numbers alone are hard to recognize.
The entered sequence becomes the output sequence. Entering 10, 1, 4 creates a document whose first page came from source page 10. Repeated page numbers are included once to prevent an accidental duplicate. Ranges must run from a lower number to a higher number, and every value must fall inside the source document's displayed page count.
Check printed labels against PDF page numbers
A PDF viewer counts file pages from the beginning, but a document may print different labels on those pages. A cover might have no printed number, introductory pages might use Roman numerals, and the first page labelled 1 could actually be PDF page 7. The extractor uses the file position shown below each preview rather than a number printed inside the page image.
Use the thumbnails to match visible headings, names, dates or diagrams before creating the result. For a large document, confirm the target pages in a trusted PDF viewer first and write down their PDF positions. If a source has inserted blank sheets, scan backs or attachments, include those positions when counting. Never infer a page solely from a contents page that may be outdated.
Avoid disclosing material around the selected pages
Extraction is useful for data minimization because the new file contains fewer visible pages. It is not a complete redaction process. Selected pages can still contain names, account numbers, comments, layers, form values or metadata that the recipient should not receive. Review every selected page at readable zoom and use dedicated redaction software when content within a page must be permanently removed.
SableApps processes the selected source in browser memory and does not upload it to a SableApps server. The downloaded result remains on your device and may be synchronized by your browser, operating system or cloud-backed Downloads folder. Use an approved device and storage location for confidential records, then remove test outputs according to the applicable retention policy.
Understand features that may not survive page copying
PDF pages can depend on document-level features such as bookmarks, internal links, form fields, scripts, attachments, accessibility tags and optional layers. This tool creates a new PDF by copying selected pages. Visible page content is the main target, while bookmarks or links may disappear or point incorrectly because their original destinations are no longer present.
Digital signatures also require care. A signature validates a particular state of a particular document; a newly created selected-page file is a different document. Keep the signed source unchanged whenever verification matters. If an official workflow requires a signed excerpt, ask the receiving organization whether it wants the original signed PDF, a formally certified extract or a newly signed selected-page document.
Verify the downloaded PDF before sending it
Open the downloaded file rather than relying only on the browser preview. Compare its page count with the selected count, confirm that the first and last pages are correct, and inspect every transition where two nonconsecutive source pages meet. Search for a known phrase if selectable text matters, and print a trial page when physical output is part of the workflow.
Use a meaningful filename that describes the contents without exposing confidential details. Keep the unchanged source until the recipient confirms delivery. For legal, medical, financial, academic or government records, record which source version and page numbers produced the extract. A short audit note makes the result reproducible and reduces confusion if the original PDF later changes.
Quick checklist
- Confirm that extraction is the required operation.
- Match PDF positions with visible page content.
- Enter individual pages and ranges in the intended order.
- Review selected pages for private information.
- Keep signed or interactive originals unchanged.
- Open and verify the downloaded result.
- Retain the source and extraction record when required.
